Shelburn Man Arrested After Pursuit in Sullivan County; Drugs and Gun Seized

SULLIVAN COUNTY, IN — A brief vehicle pursuit through rural Indiana roads ended with the arrest of a Shelburn man and the discovery of drugs and a loaded gun inside his vehicle, according to the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office.

Pursuit Ends in Arrest

On September 9, deputies attempted to pull over a vehicle on County Road 600 N for multiple traffic violations. The driver, identified as 38-year-old John H. Taylor, ignored emergency lights and sirens, leading officers on a short chase.

The pursuit continued onto U.S. 41 and then Mill Street in Shelburn, before Taylor eventually stopped and surrendered without further resistance.

Drugs and Firearm Discovered

Deputies conducted a probable cause search of the SUV, uncovering about 30 grams of suspected alpha-PHP, also known as bath salts. Additional items included methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia, and packaging materials.

Investigators also discovered a loaded handgun inside the vehicle. Authorities noted that Taylor, already classified as a serious violent felon, was prohibited from possessing firearms.

Charges Filed Against Taylor

Taylor was booked into the Sullivan County Jail and now faces a series of felony and misdemeanor charges, including:

  • Dealing a Schedule 1 Controlled Substance – Level 2 Felony
  • Possession of a Firearm by a Serious Violent Felon – Level 4 Felony
  • Possession of Methamphetamine – Level 5 Felony
  • Possession of a Controlled Substance – Level 6 Felony
  • Resisting Law Enforcement – Level 6 Felony
  • Possession of Drug Paraphernalia – Class C Misdemeanor

“These charges carry significant penalties,” the sheriff’s office stated, underscoring the seriousness of the incident.

Community Safety Reminder

Sheriff’s officials used the arrest to remind residents about the dangers of illegal drugs and firearms in the community. They also warned that vehicle pursuits pose risks not only to suspects but to other drivers and pedestrians along the roadway.
