South Texas Flood Alert Issued as Heavy Rain Expected Wednesday Through Friday

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX — The National Weather Service (NWS) Corpus Christi has issued a flood alert for South Texas, warning of heavy rainfall and potential flash flooding from Wednesday evening through Friday night.

Rainfall Forecast and Totals

Forecasters predict widespread rainfall totals of 1 to 2 inches, with localized areas receiving as much as 4 inches.

The areas at greatest risk include:

  • Urban streets and low-lying neighborhoods
  • Creek crossings and small streams
  • Major highways and roadways prone to flooding

Timing of the Storms

The heaviest rain is expected to begin late Wednesday afternoon, continuing intermittently through Thursday and Friday.

Rainfall won’t be continuous, but multiple rounds of storms are likely, especially near coastal areas, where repeated downpours could trigger flash flooding.

Areas of Greatest Concern

The NWS highlighted Corpus Christi, Rockport, and Victoria as cities most likely to face significant impacts.

“Even a few inches of rain in a short period can quickly overwhelm streets and drainage systems. Residents should remain alert and avoid flooded roads,” the NWS cautioned.

Safety Recommendations

Authorities urge residents to prepare and take precautions ahead of the storms:

  • Avoid driving through flooded roadways
  • Monitor local alerts and NWS warnings closely
  • Secure outdoor items and protect property in low-lying areas
  • Prepare an emergency kit with essentials and important documents

Why Flooding Is a Concern

Recent weather has left much of South Texas with saturated soils, reducing the ground’s ability to absorb more water. This increases the likelihood of flash flooding in poorly drained neighborhoods and along creeks or streams.

Duration of the Alert

The flood threat will remain in effect through Friday night, with the NWS continuing to monitor conditions and issue updates as needed.

Officials advise South Texas residents to remain vigilant, plan travel accordingly, and take steps now to reduce risks.
