Texas Woman Sentenced to Five Years in Prison After Attacking and Taunting Police Officer During Store Parking Lot Disturbance
DUMAS, Texas — A Texas woman who attacked a police officer responding to a store parking lot disturbance has been sentenced to five years in prison, authorities announced this week.
Jury Convicts Cassandra Casucci
According to the 69th Judicial District Attorney’s Office, 35-year-old Cassandra Leann Casucci was convicted by a Moore County jury on one count of assaulting a peace officer. The charge carries a minimum two-year sentence and up to 20 years in prison under Texas law.
Judge Rowdy Rhoades sentenced Casucci to five years behind bars, following a trial that detailed her aggressive and taunting behavior toward officers during a January confrontation.
Police Called to Store Over Disturbance
The altercation occurred on January 24 in a store parking lot in Dumas, a small town in the Texas Panhandle. Officers were dispatched after a shopper reported that Casucci was acting erratically and scaring people, according to KFDA-TV (CBS Amarillo).
When officers arrived, they found Casucci with her two minor children in the vehicle. Police say she refused to provide identification and appeared agitated as officers questioned her.
As the situation escalated, officers said they smelled marijuana coming from her car, prompting them to detain her. That’s when Casucci allegedly became violent.
“Catch Me on the Streets Without That Badge”
Police said Casucci pushed a Dumas Police Department sergeant and kicked him in the head during the struggle that followed.
Even after being restrained, she continued to taunt and threaten the officer, reportedly shouting:
“Catch me on the streets without that badge — you’ll be eating dirt soon.”
She also allegedly warned the officer that he was “going down for this.”
Despite the outburst, officers were able to subdue and arrest her without further injuries. Casucci later testified at trial that the physical confrontation was unintentional, but the jury rejected her claim after viewing police reports and witness statements.
Additional Charges Pending
Prosecutors said Casucci still faces additional charges of criminal mischief and a marijuana-related offense, both filed in late February.
The 69th Judicial District Attorney’s Office described the sentence as a fair outcome, noting that law enforcement officers should not have to fear for their safety while responding to routine calls.
Casucci is currently serving her sentence in a Texas Department of Criminal Justice facility.
