Two Tornadoes Confirmed in Grundy County From August Storms, Iowa’s 2025 Total Reaches 31

GRUNDY COUNTY, Iowa – Weather officials have confirmed that two tornadoes touched down in Grundy County during storms on August 18, raising Iowa’s statewide total to 31 tornadoes so far in 2025.
Tornado Tracks and Impact
The first tornado was recorded just after 7 a.m. northwest of Wellsburg, following a short track of just over one mile. Roughly 30 minutes later, a second tornado touched down three miles north of Grundy Center, staying on the ground for three miles.
According to satellite and drone surveys, both tornadoes traveled over open farmland, causing crop damage but no structural damage. Because of limited impact, officials classified both as EF-Unknown, with insufficient evidence to determine their top-end strength.
Iowa’s Tornado Totals in 2025
With these new confirmations, Iowa has now experienced 31 tornadoes in 2025. Nearly all of them — all but three — have been categorized as weak storms (EF1 or below).
July stands out as the most active month this year, with 18 confirmed tornadoes. While June is historically the peak month for tornadoes in Iowa, averaging 13 per year, 2025’s activity shifted later into midsummer.
No tornadoes have been confirmed yet in September, though Iowa typically averages about 50 tornadoes annually.
A Relatively Active Year So Far
Although most of 2025’s tornadoes have been on the weaker side, the confirmations serve as a reminder of the volatile nature of severe weather in the Midwest. Grundy County’s recent storms also highlight the importance of early warning systems and rapid storm surveys that help communities track and respond to severe weather events.
As the fall season approaches, meteorologists will continue monitoring Iowa’s storm activity to see if totals climb closer to the state’s long-term yearly average.
