Utah Teen Charged With Murder After Shooting 15-Year-Old Girlfriend in the Head With Her Mom’s Glock

OGDEN, UTAH — A 16-year-old Utah teen is facing first-degree murder charges after allegedly shooting his 15-year-old girlfriend, Chanelle Alvarez, in the head at close range inside her family’s Ogden home, according to newly released police documents.

Authorities say Hezekiah Plummer, who was “known to run away” and had been staying at the home on and off, shot the girl with her mother’s Glock handgun after showing up late at night claiming he had nowhere else to go.

Tragic Early-Morning Shooting

Investigators say the shooting happened early Saturday morning around 3 a.m. inside the home on Ogden’s west side.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Plummer arrived at the house around 1 a.m., telling Alvarez and her family he had “nowhere to stay.” The 15-year-old agreed to let him spend the night.

A few hours later, a man living upstairs told police he awoke to a loud gunshot that sounded “very close.” When he rushed downstairs to check on his family, he allegedly saw Plummer coming up the stairs holding a firearm.

Plummer told him there had been a “robbery” and named someone he claimed “tried to rob them,” before running from the house with the weapon.

Downstairs, the witness found Chanelle Alvarez fatally wounded with a gunshot wound to the head.

Gun Taken From Girlfriend’s Mother

Police say Alvarez’s mother had purchased the Glock handgun just weeks before the shooting. Investigators later found the gun’s empty box in her daughter’s room.

According to the mother, she was awakened in the middle of the night by Plummer, who said he was looking for a “backpack” he thought he left in her bedroom.

She told police that when she left for work around 2:40 a.m., Plummer and Alvarez were still in her daughter’s bedroom — and were the only two inside at the time.

“Plummer did not have permission to possess or take the firearm,” the affidavit stated.

An autopsy later confirmed that Alvarez was shot at close range, with stippling found near the wound — indicating the muzzle of the gun was only inches away when it was fired.

Teen Charged as an Adult

Plummer was charged as an adult with first-degree murder, obstruction of justice, and theft of a firearm, according to the Weber County Attorney’s Office.

Police said after the shooting, Plummer fled to Davis County, where he was later found with several ounces of marijuana and over $4,000 in cash — resulting in an additional drug charge.

Authorities said he refused to speak with detectives after being taken into custody and invoked his right to remain silent.

Family Calls It Domestic Violence

A GoFundMe set up by Alvarez’s relatives described the 15-year-old’s death as the result of domestic violence.

According to investigators, Plummer and Alvarez had been dating and he had previously lived with her family for extended periods, keeping personal belongings at their home until being asked to leave a few weeks before the killing.

“Hezekiah was known to run away from home and had stayed at the victim’s residence for substantial periods of time,” police wrote in their report.

The Alvarez family is now calling for justice for their daughter, remembering her as a bright, kind-hearted teen whose life was cut short by violence.
