UW–Madison Student Shot After Fight Outside Fraternity House on Langdon Street
MADISON, Wisconsin — A University of Wisconsin–Madison student was hospitalized after being shot during a large altercation Friday night outside a Langdon Street fraternity house, prompting an emergency BadgerSAFE alert and police lockdown.
Chaos Erupts on Langdon Street
According to The Daily Cardinal, the incident occurred outside the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity house at 221 Langdon Street around 11:20 p.m., when a fight involving multiple people broke out.
Video obtained by student journalists showed a crowd of students and bystanders engaged in a physical brawl when one participant pulled out a firearm and fired into the group.
The 18-year-old victim, a UW–Madison student, was shot and rushed to a local hospital, where he was treated and released later that night. Another individual sustained minor injuries during the scuffle but did not require hospitalization.
Police said multiple suspects fled the scene immediately after the gunfire.
Suspect Arrested Nearby
Responding officers quickly surrounded the area and took an 18-year-old suspect into custody a few blocks away. Authorities confirmed the suspect is not affiliated with the university.
The BadgerSAFE alert urged students to shelter in place and avoid the area while police secured the scene. The lockdown was lifted around 12:09 a.m., after officers determined there was no ongoing threat to campus safety.
Campus and Fraternity Respond
In a public statement posted to Instagram, Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity condemned the violence and expressed concern for student safety:
“This incident does highlight the overall increase of violence that UW–Madison students have experienced over the past couple of years. Let’s do our part to keep our wonderful college town safe.”
Police said Madison saw an 8% decrease in violent crime last year, but the fraternity’s remarks echoed growing fears among students following several recent off-campus incidents near the Langdon Street and Lake Mendota corridor.
Investigation Ongoing
The Madison Police Department and UWPD are continuing to investigate the shooting and have requested additional video evidence from witnesses.
Anyone with information or footage is urged to contact Madison Area Crime Stoppers at (608) 266-6014 or submit a tip anonymously through p3tips.com.
The university’s Dean of Students Office said counseling and support resources are available for anyone affected by the event.
