Vacant Trailer Fire in Des Moines Marks Second Blaze at Glenwood Mobile Home Park

DES MOINES, Iowa — A vacant trailer at Glenwood Mobile Home Park on the city’s south side caught fire early Thursday morning, marking the second trailer blaze at the park in just two months, officials confirmed.
Firefighters Respond in Early Morning Hours
Crews were called around 3:45 a.m. on Aug. 28 to the 2800 block of Southeast 14th Street, where they found the trailer engulfed in flames. Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, but officials say the cause remains unclear.
Spokesperson Gene Emery of the Des Moines Fire Department said it’s not certain who reported the fire. No injuries were reported.
Second Fire in Two Months Raises Concerns
This is the second fire at Glenwood Mobile Home Park in recent weeks. The vacant unit, described as a “hoarding trailer” filled with belongings, still had active utility connections, including gas and water.
“But with nobody living there, it just seemed kind of strange,” Emery said, noting that typical causes like smoking or candles shouldn’t have been a factor.
Investigation Underway
Investigators are now looking into what triggered the blaze and whether the two recent fires are connected. With two vacant trailers burning in a short span of time, neighbors and officials are expressing concern over possible safety risks at the park.
The Des Moines Fire Department said it will continue to investigate the cause, with utility connections and potential outside activity being considered.
