Wisconsin GOP Lawmakers Push to Extend Law Enforcement Bill of Rights to State Troopers

MADISON, WISCONSINRepublican lawmakers in Wisconsin are backing a proposal to expand the state’s Law Enforcement Officers’ Bill of Rights, aiming to include state troopers under its protections.

The plan would give Wisconsin State Patrol officers the same procedural rights and employment safeguards currently afforded to local law enforcement officers when facing internal investigations or disciplinary action.

Supporters say the move ensures all officers receive equal treatment under state law, while critics argue it could make it harder to hold state police accountable for misconduct.

Expanding Protections for State Police

The Law Enforcement Officers’ Bill of Rights outlines how internal investigations into police officers must be conducted, including provisions for representation, notice before questioning, and limits on disciplinary measures.

Republicans argue that extending these protections to state troopers is a matter of fairness and consistency.

“If these rights exist for local police, they should exist for our state troopers too,” one GOP lawmaker said during the committee discussion.

However, some watchdog groups and criminal justice reform advocates have raised concerns that the measure could shield misconduct and reduce public transparency.

Accountability Debate Continues

The proposal comes amid ongoing statewide debates over police oversight and reform. Organizations such as The Badger Project, a Wisconsin-based nonprofit newsroom, have reported on growing tensions between law enforcement agencies and advocates pushing for greater accountability in officer discipline.

Opponents say expanding these rights could limit investigations into excessive force or abuse of power.

“This is not about fairness — it’s about putting more barriers between the public and the truth,” said one policy advocate familiar with the legislation.

The measure is expected to be reviewed in upcoming legislative sessions. If approved, Wisconsin State Patrol officers would gain the same procedural protections as local officers under the state’s existing law.
