NIAGARA, WISCONSIN — A man was killed Wednesday afternoon after crashing head-on into a garbage truck while fleeing from police, according to the Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ).
The fatal incident occurred shortly after 1:11 p.m. when a Niagara Police officer attempted a traffic stop. Instead of pulling over, the driver sped away down Main Street, swerving into oncoming traffic and colliding with a GFL Environmental truck in the 1000 block of Main Street.
Driver Pronounced Dead at the Scene
Authorities said that immediate medical aid was provided to the man, but he was pronounced dead at the crash site. His identity has not yet been released pending notification of family members.
No other individuals were injured in the collision, including the garbage truck driver, officials confirmed.
Wisconsin DOJ Leading Investigation
The Wisconsin DOJ’s Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) is handling the inquiry as part of its officer-involved death investigation protocol. The DCI will compile its findings and present them to the Marinette County District Attorney’s Office for review.
As standard procedure, the Niagara Police officer involved in the attempted traffic stop has been placed on administrative leave while the investigation continues.
Multiple Agencies Assisting
The investigation involves several local and state agencies, including the Wisconsin State Patrol, Marinette County Sheriff’s Office, Niagara Fire Department, Niagara Rescue, and a DCI crime response specialist.
Officials have not yet disclosed why the officer initiated the traffic stop or what caused the suspect to flee.
Residents of Niagara expressed shock at the tragedy, which took place in broad daylight along one of the city’s main thoroughfares. Authorities urged the public to remain patient as the investigation proceeds.
