Wisconsin Man Shot in Milwaukee Speaks From Hospital as Suspect Found Hiding in Wig
MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN — A 31-year-old man from northern Wisconsin is speaking out from his hospital bed after surviving a gunshot wound to the stomach earlier this month in Milwaukee. The suspect, who police say tried to flee wearing a wig, is now in custody and facing multiple felony charges.
Victim Shot While Visiting Milwaukee Friend
The victim, Dewl Davis, was traveling with his girlfriend to Illinois on October 5 when they decided to stop at a friend’s house in Milwaukee’s Riverwest neighborhood.
Inside the home, Davis said another man — later identified as 45-year-old Gregory Kaiser — began acting erratically and pointing guns at people.
“Her boyfriend just started freaking out and pointing guns at people and stuff,” Davis told FOX6 News from his hospital bed.
When Davis and his girlfriend stepped outside, Kaiser allegedly followed and waved the gun at them.
“[He] pointed it at me and my girlfriend and after he did that, he put it under his belt buckle — and I just went after him, trying to get it from him,” Davis said.
Moments later, Kaiser fired, striking Davis in the stomach.
Victim Undergoes Six Surgeries and Faces Long Recovery
The bullet tore through Davis’s liver, lung, and intestines, leaving him in critical condition.
“I didn’t expect to be alive, I can tell you that,” he said. “It hit my liver, my lung, my intestines… I’ve had six surgeries so far.”
Doctors at Froedtert Hospital say it could be months before Davis is able to leave the hospital. His family has remained by his side throughout his recovery.
“Gun violence is crazy,” said his brother, Dustan Davis. “He is very lucky.”
Suspect Found Wearing Wig and Painting Car
Police say Gregory Kaiser tried to escape capture in the days after the shooting.
He was arrested two days later in the Riverwest area, where officers found him trying to get into his girlfriend’s car. According to a search warrant, Kaiser had disguised himself with a woman’s wig and painted the vehicle a different color in an attempt to hide.
He has since been charged with multiple felonies and remains in custody.
Family Raises Funds for Recovery
A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help cover Davis’s mounting medical expenses as he continues his long recovery.
From his hospital bed, Davis had one message about what happened:
“Gun violence is not okay. It’s serious. People playing with guns hurt innocent people.”
