SUPERIOR, Wis. — Authorities in Douglas County are warning residents about a new phone scam targeting people across northern Wisconsin. The scheme uses spoofed 715 area code numbers to impersonate law enforcement and pressure victims into sending money.

How the Scam Works

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office says scammers are calling residents and claiming they have outstanding citations or warrants. Victims are then told they can avoid arrest by paying over the phone.

To make the call seem more legitimate, the scammers disguise their caller ID with a local 715 area code. Officials say this tactic increases the likelihood that people will answer, thinking it’s a genuine local call.

Demands for Gift Cards

Investigators warn that the fraudsters frequently demand payment in the form of gift cards, including popular options like Visa, Apple, or retail brands.

“The Sheriff’s Office does not accept gift cards as payment, and we would never solicit money over the phone,” deputies emphasized in a recent social media post.

Gift card payments are a common red flag in scams, since the funds are untraceable once used.

AI Voice Technology Adds Risk

Officials also cautioned that scammers are now using artificial intelligence to mimic realistic voices. Some victims have reported calls with what sounded like law enforcement officers or government officials — voices convincing enough to cause panic.

Authorities stress that if you ever receive such a call, hang up immediately and verify the claim by calling the agency directly using its official phone number.
