Woman Embarrassed as She’s Been Washing Hair Wrong for Decades After Viral TikTok

A woman has gone viral after admitting she was left “embarrassed” to discover she had been washing her hair incorrectly for more than 30 years, according to The Mirror.

Years of Oily Hair Problems

Posting her story on Reddit, the woman said she has battled oily hair since childhood. Despite experimenting with clarifying shampoos and conditioners, her hair would always return to being greasy within 24 hours.

“I just learnt why my hair has been so oily for nearly all of my life and I feel stupid,” she confessed.

The TikTok That Changed Everything

The breakthrough came when she came across a TikTok video explaining that many people with oily hair fail to properly rinse out shampoo and conditioner or use excessive amounts.

She tried the advice, dividing her hair into sections while rinsing and cutting her conditioner use down to a fraction of her usual amount. After taking 15 minutes to fully rinse, she noticed a dramatic change.

“You know what, my hair looks f**ing fabulous!”* she wrote. “I can go two days without worrying about my hair being a greasy mess.”

Frustration Over Lost Years

Despite her excitement, she admitted feeling upset that it took her so long to learn such a simple adjustment.

“Do you know how many times I’ve just put my hair up in a bun because no other hairstyle looked good on me? Do you know how many times I’ve given up on curling my hair because it couldn’t hold a curl?” she asked.

“I’m in my 30s! How did I not know how to wash my hair properly?”

Stylist and Community Reactions

Commenters quickly chimed in with tips and validation. A retired hairstylist replied: “Shampoo is for your scalp and roots, and conditioner is for your lengths and ends. Using both on all your hair is why you’re having issues.”

Another user explained that clients often left shampoo residue in their hair, causing foam buildup even during salon washes. Others admitted to making the same mistake and said that section rinsing had also solved their own oily hair problems.

The viral story shows how even everyday routines like washing your hair can carry long-standing misconceptions. For more lifestyle updates and trending stories, follow ChicagoMusicGuide.com.
