8-Year-Old Louisville Child Dies After Reported Self-Inflicted Gunshot; Police Investigating Circumstances

LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY — Authorities are investigating the tragic death of an 8-year-old child who died Saturday night from what police believe was a self-inflicted gunshot wound in south Louisville.

According to Louisville Metro Police, officers were called to the 6900 block of Bardstown Road shortly after 10:30 p.m. on November 8 following reports of a shooting.

When officers arrived, they found the child suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. Despite emergency efforts, the child was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators Working to Determine What Happened

Police spokesperson Matthew Sanders said investigators are still working to determine whether the shooting was accidental or intentional, and if any criminal charges may result.

“It’s unknown at this time if the shooting was accidental, intentional or if charges will be filed,” Sanders said.

The incident remains under active investigation by LMPD’s Homicide Unit, which is interviewing family members and reviewing evidence from inside the home.

Community Reacts to Tragic Loss

Neighbors expressed heartbreak over the news, describing the area as typically quiet and family-oriented. Community members have already begun leaving candles and stuffed animals near the scene to honor the young victim.

Local child safety advocates are also reminding parents about the importance of secure firearm storage, particularly in homes with children.
