Church Bus Overturns on I-29 in Buchanan County, Injuring Students From Kansas

BUCHANAN COUNTY, Missouri — A church bus carrying Kansas students overturned Friday afternoon on Interstate 29 south of St. Joseph, leaving eight people injured, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

What Happened on I-29

The crash occurred around 3:30 p.m. near Faucett, Missouri, when the bus, registered to Olivet Baptist Church in Westwood, Kansas, suffered blowouts of both its front and rear passenger-side tires. The vehicle veered off the roadway and overturned.

The bus was transporting students from Shawnee Mission Christian School to athletic events in northern Missouri when the accident occurred.

Injuries Reported

Highway Patrol officials said:

  • Two students suffered serious injuries
  • Six students sustained minor injuries
  • None of the injuries were considered life-threatening

A pastor with Olivet Baptist Church confirmed about 30 passengers were on board at the time.

Emergency Response and Road Closure

Video from the scene showed the bus flipped on its side with the front door open and students sitting along the closed interstate. Emergency crews treated the injured before transporting them for further care.

Interstate 29 was shut down for several hours following the crash but reopened around 7 p.m. Friday.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the cause of the tire blowouts and subsequent crash.
