Kentucky Man Fatally Shot by Bracken County Deputy During Welfare Check

BROOKSVILLE, KENTUCKY – A 34-year-old man was shot and killed Tuesday evening after an altercation with a Bracken County Sheriff’s deputy during a welfare check at his home.
Welfare Check Turns Deadly
According to Kentucky State Police (KSP), deputies were called around 6 p.m. to a residence on East Augusta-Chatham Road to check on Justin Gillespie.
Investigators said a deputy was speaking with Gillespie when he suddenly ran inside the home and attempted to exit through a back door. It was there that an altercation occurred, leading the deputy to fire his weapon. Gillespie was struck and pronounced dead at the scene.
State Police Lead Investigation
The Bracken County Sheriff’s Office has requested that the investigation be handled by Kentucky State Police. Officials have not yet released further details about what prompted the deputy to open fire or the events leading up to the confrontation.
No injuries to law enforcement officers were reported.
