Champaign Weather Alert: Weekend Heat Wave to Push Temperatures Into Mid-90s

CHAMPAIGN, ILLINOIS – Central Illinois is preparing for a stretch of late-summer heat as temperatures soar heading into the weekend. Friday is expected to reach 91°F, with even higher readings likely on Saturday and Sunday.

Hot Friday Sets the Stage

The National Weather Service in Lincoln reports that Friday will remain mostly sunny with light southeast winds. While skies will stay clear, sun glare along I-72 and local roads could challenge drivers. Officials are urging residents to stay hydrated and limit strenuous outdoor activity during peak afternoon heat.

Weekend Heat Intensifies

By Saturday, highs are expected to climb into the mid-90s, and Sunday could peak near 96°F, marking one of the hottest September days so far this year. Overnight lows in the upper 60s will provide little relief.

The heat may affect outdoor events, high school sports, and farming schedules. City officials in Champaign have encouraged residents to make use of cooling centers and to check on neighbors vulnerable to extreme heat. Outdoor workers are being advised to adjust schedules to avoid peak afternoon hours.

Power Grid and Energy Use Concerns

The sustained heat is expected to drive up air conditioning use, potentially straining local power systems. Officials are urging households to conserve energy where possible, especially during the hottest hours of the day.

While conditions may ease slightly early next week, highs will still linger in the low 90s, keeping temperatures above seasonal norms. A true fall cooldown isn’t expected until at least midweek.
