Kankakee Man Arrested After Allegedly Trying to Sell Stolen Copper Wire

KANKAKEE, IL — A Kankakee man has been arrested after police say he tried to sell stolen copper wire at a local recycling facility, just days after it was reported missing from a home on South Warren Avenue.
Burglary Reported on South Warren
On Saturday, Kankakee police were called to a residence in the 200 block of South Warren after the property owner discovered that someone had forced open an electrical box and stolen copper wiring over the course of several weeks.
Later that day, officers received video evidence from a neighbor who captured the burglary on camera.
Suspect Identified at Recycling Facility
On Monday, police were called to a recycling facility on West South Tec Drive, where a man was attempting to sell copper wire.
Officers identified him as 36-year-old Michael P. Attwood, who reportedly matched the description of the burglary suspect seen on video.
Arrest and Charges
During the arrest, Attwood was found carrying a backpack containing:
- Needle-nosed pliers
- A flashlight
- A crowbar
- Black gloves
Police say these items were consistent with tools used in the burglary.
Attwood was taken into custody and charged with residential burglary and possession of burglary tools.
Case Remains Under Investigation
Authorities confirmed the case remains under investigation and additional charges are possible as evidence is reviewed.
This arrest underscores the ongoing issue of copper wire thefts in Illinois communities, where rising scrap prices often fuel break-ins and property damage.
