UW-Madison Police Seek Homicide Charges After 62-Year-Old Man Dies From Brutal Camp Randall Attack

MADISON, Wisconsin — A 62-year-old man who was severely beaten near Camp Randall Stadium earlier this month has died, and University of Wisconsin-Madison Police are now urging prosecutors to upgrade charges against the suspect to first-degree homicide.

Victim Dies Days After Attack

The victim, identified as Mark A. Tiggelaar of Fitchburg, was attacked in the early morning hours of September 20 in a parking lot near 15 Breese Terrace, next to Camp Randall.

He was hospitalized with critical injuries and died on September 25, according to university officials. An autopsy conducted on September 27 determined Tiggelaar’s cause of death was homicidal blunt force trauma.

Suspect Arrested and Charges Pending

Police arrested Keith A. Jones in connection with the incident. He was booked into the Dane County Jail on tentative charges of aggravated battery with intent to cause great bodily harm, robbery, and probation violation.

Following Tiggelaar’s death, UW-Madison police are asking the Dane County District Attorney’s Office to amend the charges to first-degree intentional homicide.

Police Call It an ‘Unprovoked’ Attack

Officials described the assault as an “unprovoked, targeted incident”, stressing that there is no ongoing threat to the campus community.

Investigators continue to piece together the events leading up to the attack and what may have motivated Jones.

The Camp Randall attack has shocked the UW-Madison community, turning a violent assault into a potential homicide case. Prosecutors are expected to review the charges in the coming days.
