Urbana Man, 60, Arrested After Allegedly Forcing Way Into Home While Posing as Maintenance Worker

URBANA, Illinois — A 60-year-old Urbana man has been arrested after police say he pretended to be a maintenance worker and forced his way into a home during an attempted invasion on Tuesday afternoon.

The suspect, identified as Michael A. Willis, was taken into custody less than two hours after the incident, according to the Urbana Police Department.

Attempted Home Invasion on South Cottage Grove

Police said the incident happened around 2:10 p.m. Tuesday in the 1800 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue.

Willis allegedly knocked on the door claiming to be a maintenance worker, then entered the residence and used physical force in an attempt to steal money.

The victim managed to push Willis away and escape the home to call for help.

Quick Arrest in the Neighborhood

Officers immediately began canvassing the area, and by 3:20 p.m., they located Willis in the same block. He was arrested without incident and booked into custody.

Police credited the quick resolution to both the victim’s response and the awareness of nearby residents.

“This is a good reminder for residents to use caution when allowing unknown individuals into their homes,” officials said. They encouraged people to verify anyone’s identity through official sources before granting access.

Ongoing Investigation

Willis is currently facing charges related to the incident, though police emphasized he is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
