Mississippi Weather Alert: Dense Fog Blankets Jackson Area as Scattered Showers Move Through

JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI — Morning commuters across central and southern Mississippi are facing dense fog and scattered showers Tuesday, prompting caution from the National Weather Service (NWS) in Jackson as visibility drops to dangerous levels in some areas.

Forecasters say fog could reduce visibility to a quarter-mile or less through mid-morning, creating hazardous driving conditions from Jackson to Hattiesburg and surrounding communities.

Fog Advisory in Effect for Southern Mississippi

According to the National Weather Service, an elevated fog threat (Level 2) remains in effect until 10 a.m. Wednesday for areas south of Interstate 20, including Brookhaven, Natchez, and Hattiesburg.

Areas north toward Greenwood and Columbus fall under a Level 1 limited threat, with patchy fog cutting visibility to around a half-mile in places.

“Drivers are urged to slow down, use low beams, and maintain extra distance between vehicles,” meteorologists warned. “Visibility may change rapidly across the region.”

Motorists are also being advised to allow extra travel time during their morning commute, as fog gradually lifts later in the day.

Scattered Showers and a Weak Cold Front on the Way

Alongside the fog, scattered showers are moving across parts of the state but are expected to taper off by Wednesday afternoon.
A weak cold front will follow, ushering in drier and cooler conditions by Thursday and Friday.

Forecasters say today’s high temperatures will range from the upper 80s to low 90s, cooling to the mid-80s by Friday. Morning lows will dip into the 50s and low 60s later in the week — signaling the start of milder fall weather heading into the weekend.
