8-Year-Old Boy Fatally Shot in Louisville; Police Investigating if Death Was Accidental
LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY — A heartbreaking tragedy struck Louisville’s south end on Saturday night after an 8-year-old boy was found dead from what police believe to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
According to the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD), officers responded to a call around 10:30 p.m. on November 8 in the 6900 block of Bardstown Road. When they arrived, they found the child suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police Say Gunshot Appears Self-Inflicted
Investigators said early findings indicate the shooting was likely self-inflicted, though it remains unclear whether the incident was accidental or intentional.
The case is now being handled by LMPD’s Homicide Unit, which continues to gather evidence and speak with family members and potential witnesses to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
“At this stage, it’s too early to determine if the incident was accidental or intentional,” police said in a statement. “The investigation remains open, and detectives are working to establish all the facts.”
Community Mourns Child’s Death
Neighbors expressed shock and sorrow following the news, calling the situation “every parent’s worst nightmare.” Many in the community have since called for stronger gun safety awareness, emphasizing the importance of securing firearms in homes with children.
Local advocacy groups have also reminded families about safe storage practices and mental health support for youth affected by gun violence.
Ongoing Investigation
Police have not released the name of the victim pending family notifications. Authorities have also not stated whether any adults present at the home may face charges.
This tragic case marks yet another instance of gun violence involving children in Kentucky this year, prompting renewed discussions about firearm access and parental responsibility.
