Madison Police Detain Person of Interest After Late-Night Westside Shooting Outside Local Business
MADISON, WISCONSIN – Police on Madison’s west side have taken a person of interest into custody following a late-night shooting outside a business on South Whitney Way, an incident that sent one person to the hospital and sparked a large police response near a Taco Bell.
Victim Found Outside Business With Gunshot Wound
According to the Madison Police Department, officers responded just after 10 p.m. Sunday to the 600 block of S. Whitney Way, where they located a shooting victim outside a local business.
First responders provided immediate medical care before transporting the individual to the hospital.
Police later confirmed the victim is expected to be OK.
Heavy Police Presence Near Taco Bell as Investigation Unfolds
WMTV news crews observed an intense police response in the area, including activity near the Taco Bell along the same roadway.
Officers secured the scene and began collecting evidence overnight.
By Monday afternoon, MPD’s Violent Crime Unit and SWAT team executed a search warrant at a residence in the 700 block of Whitney Way, which they identified as connected to the shooting.
Person of Interest Taken Into Custody
Around 1:40 p.m. Monday, police confirmed that a person of interest was detained on a Department of Corrections hold.
Investigators emphasized that the shooting appears to be targeted, and there is no ongoing threat to the public.
MPD’s Violent Crime Unit is now taking the lead on the investigation.
