Florida Salvation Army Bell Ringer Charged After Allegedly Trying to Impale Publix Manager Outside Store

STUART, FLORIDA — A Salvation Army volunteer ringing bells outside a Publix supermarket in Stuart was arrested after deputies say he aggressively confronted shoppers and then attempted to impale a store manager with a donation stand during a holiday charity shift.

Authorities identified the suspect as Steven Pavlik, 63, who faces charges of aggravated assault and resisting arrest, according to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office.

Holiday Charity Shift Turns Confrontational

Deputies said the incident happened in the days leading up to Christmas while Pavlik was doing part-time holiday charity work as a Salvation Army bell ringer outside the Publix Super Market shopping center.

Instead of collecting donations, Pavlik allegedly began “aggressively confronting people walking by,” creating what deputies described as a major disturbance outside the store. Investigators believe Pavlik was intoxicated at the time.

Store Manager Intervenes, Alleged Attack Follows

According to the sheriff’s office, a Publix store manager stepped outside to address the disruption and speak with Pavlik. The conversation quickly escalated.

Deputies say Pavlik became violent and attempted to impale the manager using the metal tripod stand that holds the Salvation Army donation kettle. The manager was not injured, authorities confirmed.

Suspect Leaves Scene, Arrested at Home

After the alleged assault, Pavlik left the area, prompting a response from deputies. Law enforcement later located him at his residence, where he was taken into custody without incident.

Pavlik was booked into the Martin County Jail on charges of aggravated assault and resisting arrest. Jail records indicate he is no longer in custody as of Saturday.

Salvation Army Bell Ringers Typically Stationed in Public Areas

Salvation Army bell ringers are commonly stationed outside grocery stores and shopping centers during the holiday season to solicit donations for people in need, using a small bell to draw attention.

Authorities did not indicate whether Pavlik was officially sanctioned by the Salvation Army at the time of the incident or whether the organization has taken any action following the arrest.

Community Reaction and Ongoing Review

The incident has raised concerns among shoppers and nearby businesses, particularly because it occurred during a busy holiday shopping period at a family-oriented retail location.

The Martin County Sheriff’s Office said the case remains under review, and prosecutors will determine how to proceed with the charges.
