Lady a Singer Charles Kelley Reveals Rare Multiple Myeloma Diagnosis and Says He Can Still Perform as the Band Plans Christmas Shows

NASHVILLE, TN — Charles Kelley, the co-lead singer and founding member of Lady A, says he has been diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a rare blood cancer. He shared the news in a video on Instagram on Tuesday with his wife, Cassie McConnell Kelley, by his side.

Kelley said the diagnosis came after he dealt with a couple of unexplained rib fractures that led doctors to order several blood tests. One of those tests, he said, revealed the cancer. Even with that news, the country star told fans he is hopeful and still focused on the work and family life that remain central to him.

How rib fractures led doctors to the diagnosis

Kelley said the health scare began with what seemed like random rib fractures. That prompted his doctor to look deeper, and the follow-up tests uncovered the multiple myeloma diagnosis.

He described the condition as rare and said he wanted to be open about what was happening. Multiple myeloma is a cancer of plasma cells, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC says those cells crowd out normal cells in the bone marrow, where the body makes red blood cells, platelets and other white blood cells.

The agency also says the disease starts in the bone marrow and can spread throughout the body. Scientists still do not fully understand why some people develop it, but age is the biggest risk factor.

Kelley says treatment is ahead, but he expects to keep working

Despite the diagnosis, Kelley said he feels young and healthy, and he credited advances in treatment for giving him optimism. He said life expectancy is better than it used to be and pointed to a friend who has also faced multiple myeloma as someone he has leaned on.

Kelley told fans he expects to undergo the first six months of treatment, though he did not say exactly when that will begin. He also said he does not think the process will be especially invasive. More importantly for Lady A fans, he said he can still work.

“I can still work,” he said in the video, adding that he expects to have tough days but wants to keep doing what he loves. He said performing still feels like the place where he belongs.

Lady A’s holiday shows remain on the calendar

Kelley said the band has upcoming performances scheduled, including several Christmas shows, and he expects to stay involved as much as possible. That detail will matter to fans who were already looking ahead to Lady A’s live dates and the group’s seasonal performances.

He framed the diagnosis as another hurdle rather than a reason to step away from music. Kelley said he wants to spend as much time as he can with his family, while still making room for the stage and the responsibilities that come with a touring career.

He also said he plans to share more when it feels right. For now, his message to fans was less about retreating and more about staying connected while he starts treatment.

Why Kelley chose to speak publicly now

Kelley connected the announcement to the way he has handled other personal challenges in public, especially his sobriety journey. He began recovery in August 2022 and has spoken at length about it with fans since then.

He said talking openly has helped him before and that sharing the cancer diagnosis felt like another way to take away some of its power. In his view, the same spirit that helped him through sobriety applies here: taking things one day at a time and accepting that not everything is under his control.

That approach, he said, is how he and his family are looking at this moment now. He said the openness is meant to be honest, not dramatic, and that he hopes to bring fans along when he is ready.

Kelley’s post drew immediate support from his Lady A bandmates in the comments. Hillary Scott called Kelley and Cassie “the strongest duo” and said she loves them both.

Dave Haywood also responded with a message of prayer and solidarity, telling Kelley that the band is there for him. The messages underscored how closely the members of Lady A have remained linked as Kelley begins treatment.
