Chicago’s Summer Festival Weekend Packs Taste of Chicago, Smokeout and More Into a Crowded Downtown Celebration
CHICAGO, IL — Chicago’s summer scene hit full stride Saturday as warm weather sent crowds to festivals, races and outdoor gatherings across the city. From Grant Park to the lakefront, the day brought food, music and neighborhood culture together in one packed weekend lineup.
Visitors and locals alike turned out for a string of popular events, making the most of a stretch of weather that felt more like peak summer than early July. The city’s biggest draws were all active at once, giving fans plenty of reasons to move from one celebration to the next.
Taste of Chicago anchors the food-focused festivities
Food remained one of the main attractions, with Taste of Chicago drawing steady foot traffic throughout Grant Park. One highlight was a giant 1,000-pound cheesecake assembled by Eli’s Cheesecake to mark the company’s 46th year, while the Shannon Rovers celebrated their 100th birthday as part of the festivities.
The oversized dessert took 10 days to build and only hours to disappear, according to those at the scene. Festivalgoers sampled everything from Italian beef nachos to burgers and fried green tomatoes, treating the event like a multi-day tasting tour rather than a single stop.
Music, racing and neighborhood celebrations kept the weekend moving
Beyond the food stands, the weekend lineup stretched across the city. The Windy City Smokeout kept going near the United Center with barbecue and country music, while the 26th annual Barrio Arts Festival returned to the National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture in Humboldt Park.
Along the lakefront, the 15th annual BTN Big 10K race added another layer to the weekend, and the Chosen Few Picnic and Music Festival drew its own crowd of music fans. The Jesse White Tumblers also helped energize the atmosphere with a performance that caught the attention of spectators.
Out-of-town visitors and social media buzz added to the holiday-week feel
The weekend’s pull extended well beyond Chicago. Some visitors traveled in from Atlanta to take in the city’s summer offerings, saying the trip was about the experience as much as any single event. Others simply spent the day moving between attractions and enjoying the outdoor setting.
Even Jimmy Kimmel got in on the action, posting on social media that he was at Taste of Chicago on Saturday. Most of the major events were set to continue through the rest of the weekend, giving festivalgoers more chances to sample food, hear music and soak up the seasonal energy.
