Columbia Police Investigate Bailey Street Shooting That Injured Man in Suspected Retaliation Attack
COLUMBIA, SOUTH CAROLINA — A Saturday night shooting in Columbia left one man wounded after gunfire erupted on Bailey Street, prompting a rapid police response.
According to the Columbia Police Department, officers were dispatched after receiving a ShotSpotter alert, a system that helps law enforcement detect the precise location of gunfire in real time. When officers arrived, they found an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound to his lower body.
Police Believe Shooting Was Retaliation
Authorities said the shooting is believed to have been an act of retaliation from a prior fight. Investigators recovered evidence showing that multiple shots were fired, and several bullets struck nearby apartment buildings.
Fortunately, no other injuries were reported, but police confirmed that the incident could have easily caused greater harm due to the number of rounds fired in a residential area.
The injured man was transported for medical care, and his injuries are not considered life-threatening, according to police.
Investigation Still Ongoing
The Columbia Police Department has not yet released information about potential suspects or arrests. Detectives are continuing to collect witness statements and analyze ballistic evidence from the scene.
Authorities are urging anyone with knowledge about the shooting to contact Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC. Anonymous tips can also be submitted online, and information leading to an arrest could be eligible for a reward.
Columbia Police are reminding residents to remain alert and report any suspicious activity in their neighborhoods as investigations into the Bailey Street incident continue.
