Earth, Wind & Fire Postpones San Francisco Concert Minutes Before Showtime After a Band Member Has a Medical Emergency at Chase Center With Lionel Richie
SAN FRANCISCO, CA — Earth, Wind & Fire called off its Aug. 6 concert at Chase Center just minutes before curtain time, saying the band could not perform because of a medical emergency involving one of its members.
The show was scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. PST. The group said the performance with Lionel Richie would be rescheduled, with a new date to be announced soon.
What the band told fans
In an Instagram post, the band asked ticket holders to keep their tickets, saying they would be honored for the new date. Fans who prefer not to wait will be able to get refunds at the point of purchase.
The group did not identify the band member involved or share any details about the medical issue. USA TODAY said it had reached out to the band’s representatives for comment.
A second setback for the tour
The postponement came about a month after Richie also pushed back shows early in the same tour. At the opening concert of his Sing a Song All Night Long Tour, he appeared to feel dizzy onstage during a performance with Earth, Wind & Fire.
Richie later resumed the tour in Pittsburgh. The Chicago and Columbus, Ohio, dates that were postponed were moved to Sept. 30 and Oct. 2, respectively.
What fans should expect next
For now, Earth, Wind & Fire has only said that a new San Francisco date will be announced soon. Until then, the Chase Center tickets remain valid for the rescheduled concert.
The abrupt delay leaves one of R&B’s best-known live pairings in limbo, but the band says it will share more information once plans are finalized.
