Akon Opens up About the Sold-Out Nights Like This Tour With Ne Yo, His Detroit Stop at Pine Knob, and the Global Sound of New Album Beautiful Day
DETROIT, MI — Akon says the current Nights Like This tour with Ne Yo is delivering the kind of show fans have to experience in person. Before the pair hit the stage in Detroit, he called it the best ticketed show on the market right now.
The sold-out stop at Pine Knob leaned into that promise with thumping rhythms, high-energy performance, and a crowd that was fully locked in from start to finish.
A show built around movement, fire and familiar hits
The tour is not just a concert setlist. Akon described it as a full production, packed with dance routines, pyrotechnics, and even bold stripper-style stunts that push the spectacle beyond a standard arena run.
He also reminded fans that he is still very much a musician’s musician. Onstage, he moves between guitar and conga drums, using live instrumentation to give old favorites and newer material a different kind of energy.
Beautiful Day stretches from Afrobeats to pop and R&B
His latest album, Beautiful Day, follows the same wide-open approach. The project mixes Afrobeats, dance and EDM, pop, and R&B, making it the kind of record Akon says can fit cookouts, beach parties, or a late-night date.
He also highlighted collaborators including Nektunez, Jahvor, Stephen Marley and Ozuna, saying each name matters in its own lane. For him, part of the point is introducing listeners to artists they may not already know.
After the final tour date, Akon plans to reset and get back to work
The Nights Like This run is set to close Friday, August 21, in Inglewood, California. After that, Akon says he plans to return to writing songs, producing artists and spending more time with family.
He also wants to make a trip back to Africa and take a break long enough to recharge. For now, though, he says the tour is the fun part, and the live reaction is what makes it worth it.
