Florida Man Who Killed Kentucky Child in 2015 Extradited After Failing to Register as Felon

LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY — A man once found not guilty by reason of insanity for killing a 6-year-old Kentucky boy in 2015 has been extradited from Florida after authorities discovered he was living near a school and had failed to register as a convicted felon.

Ronald Exantus, who served half of his 20-year sentence, was arrested last week in Marion County, Florida, where deputies found him residing just yards from a school’s entrance.

“That’s literally less than probably 40 yards from the school entrance,” Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods said at a press conference. “An individual that has already killed a 6-year-old, stabbed his sister — next to one of my schools. Will not tolerate it. Kentucky, if you’re listening, keep their a**** in your state.”

Released Early, Rearrested for Probation Violation

Exantus had been released from prison in early October under Kentucky’s mandatory reentry supervision program, six months before completing his sentence.

He was originally sentenced to 20 years in prison after being found not guilty of murder by reason of insanity in the stabbing death of 6-year-old Logan Tipton in Versailles. Investigators said Exantus broke into the family’s home in 2015, stabbed Logan to death in his bed, and also injured his sister before being subdued by their father.

While Exantus was found criminally insane at the time of the attack, he still served time for related charges and was placed under reentry supervision upon release.

Authorities said Exantus failed to register as a convicted felon within 48 hours of arriving in Florida, as required by law.

Sheriff’s Outrage and Swift Arrest

After discovering his proximity to a school, Marion County deputies arrested Exantus on a misdemeanor registration violation and probation violation.

“The house he was living in is circled in red — less than 40 yards from a school entrance,” Sheriff Woods emphasized. “We will not allow dangerous individuals like this to live near children.”

Following his arrest, Florida officials confirmed that Exantus would be extradited back to Kentucky to face a judge for violating probation terms and failing to register.

Background on the 2015 Killing

The 2015 Versailles murder shocked Kentucky communities. Exantus, then 32, randomly broke into the Tipton family home, stabbed young Logan to death, and assaulted his family before being restrained.

Although the court ruled that Exantus was legally insane, his release and relocation to Florida have reignited public outrage — particularly given his residence near a school.

Exantus will now be returned to Kentucky for further legal proceedings.
