Houlton Man, 85, Dies Nearly a Week After Rollover Crash Near St. Croix County Roundabout

ST. JOSEPH TOWNSHIP, WISCONSIN — An 85-year-old man from Houlton has died nearly a week after being critically injured in a rollover crash near a roundabout in St. Croix County, according to local authorities.

The St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Paul Paulson succumbed to his injuries on Saturday at Regions Hospital, six days after the crash. His death marks the ninth fatal crash reported in the county so far this year.

Crash Occurred Near Highway 35-64 and County Road E

Deputies said the crash happened around 6:30 p.m. on Sunday when Paulson’s vehicle, which had been traveling east on County Road E, attempted to enter northbound Wisconsin Highway 35-64 near St. Joseph Township.

Investigators believe Paulson lost control of his vehicle, which then veered into a ditch and rolled over. Emergency crews responded immediately and found Paulson trapped inside the wreckage.

According to deputies, he was wearing a seatbelt, and firefighters had to extricate him from the vehicle before paramedics transported him to a nearby hospital.

Despite treatment, Paulson died from his injuries nearly a week later.

Officials Continue to Investigate Cause of Crash

Authorities have not determined what caused Paulson to lose control of his vehicle. The St. Croix County Sheriff’s Office said there were no immediate signs of impairment or collision with another vehicle, but the investigation remains ongoing.

“We extend our condolences to the family of Mr. Paulson,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.

The fatal crash adds to a growing number of roadway deaths in western Wisconsin this year, prompting renewed emphasis on safe driving practices among elderly motorists.

As the community mourns Paul Paulson’s passing, officials are reminding drivers to exercise caution around roundabouts and rural intersections, where visibility and speed can often contribute to serious accidents.
