Jazz Is Dead and TBWA Chiat Day LA Launch Played by Humans Stamp as Listeners Struggle to Spot AI Made Songs in Streaming Catalogs
LOS ANGELES, CA — As AI tools keep pumping out songs at streaming speed, Jazz Is Dead and TBWA\Chiat\Day LA have introduced Played By Humans, a stamp meant to certify that music was made by real people.
The campaign lands as concern grows over how hard it has become to tell machine-made tracks from human performances. A Deezer-Ipsos survey cited by the initiative found that 97% of listeners could not distinguish between the two.
How the Played By Humans stamp works
The platform at playedbyhumans.org lets musicians, labels and listeners upload tracks for analysis. Songs that meet the project’s authenticity threshold can earn a blockchain-backed Played By Humans stamp for use on physical and digital releases.
Adrian Younge, Jazz Is Dead co-founder, said the mark means a song is at least 85% played by humans. TBWA\Chiat\Day LA says the design is meant to function like a familiar advisory label: clear, trusted and easy to read.
Why its creators say jazz makes the argument
For Younge, the project fits jazz’s long tradition of improvisation and live interaction. He said the urgency existed even before AI accelerated music production, because computers had already made creation easier to automate.
Pedro Pérez, TBWA\Chiat\Day LA’s chief creative officer, framed the effort as pro-human rather than anti-AI. He said AI can be a useful tool, but the problem starts when it begins to replace the artist’s own ideas and experience.
What the movement hopes to change next
The initiative is aiming to give listeners a way to make informed choices, not to shame people who use AI tools. Its founders want the stamp to become as recognizable as organic labels, parental advisory stickers or movie ratings.
They also see Played By Humans as a possible template for other creative industries. The broader goal is transparency, especially as the group warns that human musicians could lose income equal to three months of annual earnings by 2028 if AI continues to spread unchecked.
