Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean Fuel Fugees Reunion Hopes as 30th Anniversary of the Score Nears
MILTON KEYNES, ENGLAND — Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean have sparked fresh hope that the Fugees could return with new music, saying their relationship has gone through a period of healing. The pair spoke ahead of a concert tied to the 30th anniversary of The Score, the group’s landmark 1996 album.
Neither artist said a new record is already in motion, but both made clear they feel closer than they have in years. Jean even burst into song during the interview, celebrating that he was “back with my bandmate.”
What the duo said about the future
Asked whether fans might hear new Fugees music, Hill answered “absolutely,” while Jean said the group’s future was in “God’s hands.” He added that the pair are “in an amazing place” and suggested they want to keep sending that energy outward.
Hill described the recent reconciliation as more than a simple professional reset, calling it an “incredible healing process” between the two as bandmates and as people. The renewed warmth was on display throughout the conversation, which centered as much on their shared history as on what might come next.
Why The Score still matters to fans
The Fugees have not released a studio album since The Score, which produced era-defining songs including “Ready or Not,” “Fu-Gee-La” and “Killing Me Softly.” Its anniversary has revived interest in the possibility of a full reunion, even though the group has not confirmed any recording plans.
The trio’s third member, Pras Michel, is currently serving a prison sentence in the United States after a federal lobbying and fraud conviction. That reality hangs over any discussion of a complete comeback, even as Hill and Jean keep the door open creatively.
A festival launch and a message to younger artists
The comments came ahead of Diaspora Calling! By Ms. Lauryn Hill, a one-day festival making its UK debut at the Milton Keynes National Bowl. The bill includes Hill, Jean, Erykah Badu, Giggs, Fireboy DML, YG Marley and Zion Marley, with Dave Chappelle hosting.
Earlier, Hill and Jean surprised fans in London’s Piccadilly Circus with an a cappella performance of “Ready or Not.” Hill said London made sense as a launch point because of its large diaspora community, while both artists also urged younger musicians to stay patient, protect their craft and not chase viral fame at the expense of the music itself.
