Louisville Police to Destroy $100K Dodge Hellcat Durango Seized in Street Racing Crackdown
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A $100,000 Dodge Hellcat Durango, confiscated by police during an illegal street racing investigation, will be crushed this week as part of the city’s crackdown on reckless driving and street takeovers.
Hellcat Durango Confiscated in 2024
According to the Louisville Metro Police Department (LMPD), the 2021 Hellcat Durango was seized in 2024 and will not be auctioned or repurposed due to several of its parts being stolen.
Officials said the decision to destroy the SUV underscores their commitment to removing unsafe vehicles tied to illegal activity.
Mayor and Police Send Strong Message
Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg emphasized the importance of vigilance in addressing street takeovers.
“I think the seriousness with which LMPD in our city has taken illegal street racing, this community has reduced the amount,” Greenberg said. “But you have to always be vigilant. We need to stay on top of it with both intelligence gathering and then quick response if and when it does occur again.”
Greenberg will personally press the button to crush the vehicle at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Louisville Metro impound lot on Frankfort Avenue.
Public Demonstration of Enforcement
LMPD posted images of the SUV and the machine that will crush it on their Facebook page, inviting the public to witness the event as a warning against participating in illegal racing.
Chief Paul Humphrey will be available to answer questions afterward, alongside a member of LMPD’s Traffic Unit.
“We are very serious about getting illegal street racing off our streets,” Greenberg said. “This car cannot go back on the street. It’s not street legal. We can’t auction it off, so tomorrow we’re going to crush it.”
The crushing of the Hellcat Durango represents a highly visible step in Louisville’s fight against illegal street racing and dangerous driving takeovers. For more Kentucky crime and public safety updates, follow ChicagoMusicGuide.com.
