Lower Hudson Valley Set for Up to 5 Inches of Snow Early Tuesday as Coastal Storm Approaches the Northeast

NEW YORK, NEW YORK — The first significant winter event of the season is expected to arrive early Tuesday as a coastal low brings accumulating snow to the Lower Hudson Valley, interior New Jersey, and portions of western Connecticut. Snow is forecast to begin as early as 1 a.m. Tuesday and continue through the evening, potentially disrupting morning travel in several communities.

According to the National Weather Service in New York, 3 to 5 inches of snow are possible across Orange County, Putnam County, and western Passaic County. Towns including Middletown, West Milford, and Cold Spring are likely to see the heaviest accumulations.

Up to 5 Inches Possible in Orange, Putnam, and Western Passaic Counties

Forecasters say that the storm will develop overnight, coating elevated and inland areas with heavy, wet snow before sunrise. The timing is expected to impact school transportation, local highways, and early work commutes.

Advisory-level snowfall totals of 3–5 inches are most probable north and west of New York City. Road conditions could deteriorate quickly in higher elevations, and plow operations may begin before dawn.

Interior New Jersey and Connecticut Enter Uncertain Transition Zone

Amounts between a few tenths of an inch and 2 inches are expected across far interior southwestern Connecticut — including Danbury and Waterbury — as well as parts of northern New Jersey.

This region sits in a critical transition zone, where the exact storm track will determine whether snow holds or quickly flips to rain. Forecasters note this area carries the highest uncertainty, and totals may shift depending on overnight temperatures and coastal influence.

NYC and Long Island Likely to See Mainly Rain

Closer to the coast, areas such as New York City, Long Island, and coastal New Jersey will primarily experience rain, though brief periods of wet snow are possible early Tuesday morning. Any accumulation near sea level is expected to remain minimal.

Eastern Connecticut could see minor accumulations by Tuesday night as colder air wraps behind the departing system.

The National Weather Service may issue Winter Weather Advisories as confidence increases.
