Man Wanted for Armed Robbery in Mexico, Missouri Arrested in Illinois

JACKSONVILLE, Illinois — A 33-year-old Missouri man wanted on multiple felony charges has been arrested in Illinois after a brief standoff with police, according to officials.
Robbery Incident in Mexico, Missouri
On Aug. 24, the Mexico Department of Public Safety said officers responded to the 1300 block of N. Washington Street after reports of a disturbance involving a gun.
Witnesses told police that Montrel Burton allegedly took a handgun from another person, pointed it at them, and fired a shot before fleeing the scene. No one was injured during the incident.
An arrest warrant was later issued for Burton on charges of:
- First-degree robbery
- Unlawful use of a weapon
- Armed criminal action
- Unlawful possession of a firearm
Arrest in Jacksonville, Illinois
Authorities in Jacksonville, Illinois, were notified that Burton may have fled across state lines. On Sept. 2 at about 11:30 a.m., Jacksonville police located him in the city.
Burton allegedly ran into a home but later surrendered without further incident. He was taken into custody and transported to the Morgan County Detention Center.
Awaiting Extradition
Officials confirmed Burton will remain in custody in Illinois until he is extradited back to Audrain County, Missouri, where he will face the pending robbery and weapons charges.
The arrest closes a multi-state search for Burton and highlights the close coordination between law enforcement agencies in Missouri and Illinois.
