LOS ANGELES, CA — Minka Kelly and Dan Reynolds have ended their relationship after four years together. A source close to the couple confirmed the split, which People first reported on Wednesday.

The breakup closes a relationship that began privately and stayed mostly out of public view. Kelly, best known for Friday Night Lights and Euphoria, and Reynolds, the singer for Imagine Dragons, were occasionally photographed together, but they rarely discussed their personal life in detail.

The pair first met in 2022 through a mutual friend, and their earliest contact was over phone calls while Kelly was in the United Kingdom for work and wrapping up her memoir, Tell Me Everything.

How a mutual friend and a memoir brought them together

Kelly said in a November 2025 appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show that Reynolds wanted to read her memoir after they connected. The book explores her complicated relationship with her mother, and Kelly described that as a revealing test of how he might respond to her story.

“You’ll either be terrified and run for the hills or you’ll see the beauty in all of it,” she said. “He fortunately was the latter.” That comment offered one of the few direct glimpses into how the relationship developed behind the scenes.

The memoir appears to have played a meaningful role in their early bond, since Kelly was abroad finishing it while the two were getting to know each other. Their first month of communication unfolded through calls rather than face-to-face meetings.

Public sightings began in Silver Lake and followed them to major events

The first public sighting of the couple came in November 2022, when they were seen leaving Cafe Stella in Silver Lake. That appearance helped confirm a relationship that had already started drawing attention after Reynolds announced a separate split the month before.

They later showed up together at several high-profile gatherings, including the 2024 Super Bowl, the Inter Miami match against the Los Angeles Galaxy in 2024, and UFC 303 in 2024. Even with those appearances, they largely kept the tone of the relationship understated.

Photos from those outings became a recurring sign that they were still together, even when they were not talking publicly about the romance themselves. Their presence at such different events also reflected how their relationship crossed entertainment, sports and pop-culture circles.

Reynolds was navigating a divorce as the relationship was taking shape

Reynolds announced in October 2022 that he and indie singer Aja Volkman had split. The two were married in 2011, and his divorce from the Nico Vega vocalist was finalized in March 2024.

That timeline mattered because Kelly and Reynolds had just begun spending time together when his previous marriage was ending. Their relationship developed during a period of transition for Reynolds, who was also balancing life as a father of four.

Kelly and Reynolds never made a habit of explaining the pace of their relationship, but the public record shows a gradual progression from low-key calls to occasional shared appearances. The couple seemed to prefer letting those moments speak for themselves.

Kelly was welcomed into a family Reynolds described as growing slowly

In a 2024 interview with People, Reynolds said his children had grown fond of Kelly. He described the blended family dynamic as something to approach carefully, rather than rush.

“We view it as kind of bonuses to the family: more people to love, more people to help,” he said. He added that both sides had been careful about “how to bring Minka into that conversation,” and praised her for being sensitive in the process.

That framing suggested the relationship had moved beyond a simple dating story and into family territory. Reynolds shares four children with Volkman, and one of the clearest signs of closeness came in July, when Kelly posted a Disneyland photo of Reynolds with the children and wrote, “No place I’d rather be.”

Their professional lives continued to overlap even as the romance ended

The couple’s breakup comes after another notable connection in their careers. In 2025, Reynolds appeared as a guest on the first season of Netflix’s Ransom Canyon, the drama that starred Kelly as Quinn O’Grady opposite Josh Duhamel’s Staten Kirkland.

That casting kept both names in the same entertainment conversation even while their relationship was unfolding off screen. The show itself was canceled after two seasons in September, adding another recent change to the pair’s year.

For fans, the split closes a relationship that had been defined by quiet affection, selective public appearances and occasional family milestones. After four years, the romance that began with mutual friends and phone calls has now come to an end.
