NYC May See Early-Morning Wintry Mix Tuesday as Coastal System Threatens Slick Roads Across the Hudson Valley and Northern New Jersey

NEW YORK, NEW YORK — A coastal storm brushing the Northeast could create slippery early-morning conditions for New York City on Tuesday, with a mix of wet snow and cold rain expected to develop before sunrise. The system may cause travel delays across the city and greater impacts in the Hudson Valley and northern New Jersey, where colder temperatures could support more wintry precipitation.

According to the National Weather Service, snow is forecast to begin between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m. Tuesday, briefly coating elevated neighborhoods before gradually changing to rain as temperatures edge above freezing.

Light Accumulations Possible in NYC, Mainly Before Sunrise

While the five boroughs are not expected to see significant totals, even under half an inch of wet snow could produce slushy patches, especially in the Bronx, northern Queens, and higher interior neighborhoods.

Lower Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Staten Island will remain mainly rainy, though flakes may mix in briefly at the height of the early-morning cooling.

Forecasters note that the biggest issue for New Yorkers will be reduced visibility, slippery crosswalks, and slower traffic flow between 5 a.m. and 9 a.m.

Hudson Valley and Northern New Jersey Could See Bigger Travel Impacts

Areas just north and west of the city may face more persistent snow, especially across the Hudson Valley and portions of Bergen, Passaic, and Morris counties in New Jersey. Temperatures in these regions are expected to dip closer to freezing, increasing the risk of slick roads.

Commuters traveling on routes such as the Palisades Interstate Parkway, I-87, and Route 17 may encounter wintry conditions early Tuesday before the system transitions to rain by midday.

NYC Roads and Transit Could See Minor Delays Tuesday Morning

City agencies are urging drivers to use extra caution on major roadways including the FDR Drive, Cross Bronx Expressway, Major Deegan, and Grand Central Parkway. Even light snow can turn untreated ramps and bridges slippery.

While major subway and bus disruptions are not expected, scattered delays are possible due to wet conditions and slower roadway speeds.

The storm is expected to exit the region by late afternoon, but the National Weather Service is also monitoring the potential for another system later in the week.
