Pennsylvania Husband Sentenced to Life for Brutal ‘24-Hour Beating’ That Killed His Wife

ELIZABETHTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA — A 43-year-old man will spend the rest of his life in prison after admitting to killing his wife during a horrific 24-hour beating that prosecutors described as one of the most brutal cases they have ever seen.

Christopher Alexander Mello was sentenced to life in prison without parole by Lancaster County Judge David L. Ashworth after pleading guilty to first-degree murder in the death of his wife, 39-year-old Alexandria Reynolds, officials announced Thursday.

‘Over 100 Bruises, Broken Bones, and a Severed Artery’

Prosecutors said the deadly assault began on September 29, 2021, and lasted through the night until September 30 inside the couple’s home on West High Street in Elizabethtown, about 65 miles west of Philadelphia.

During court proceedings, Assistant District Attorney Fritz Haverstick called the ordeal a “24-hour beating,” explaining that Mello punched, kicked, and smashed Reynolds’ head into the walls, leaving multiple holes the size of a human head.

The autopsy revealed shocking injuries — over 100 bruises, a broken jaw, neck, orbital socket, and nose, as well as internal organ damage and a severed artery in her brain.

“It’s clear that she suffered a great deal,” Haverstick told the court. “And I hope he thinks about that for the rest of his life.”

Reynolds’ parents were reportedly sobbing in the courtroom as prosecutors described the extent of their daughter’s injuries.

Police Found Body in Bathtub, Walls Covered in Blood

Police were first alerted when Mello’s father called 911, saying his son was “acting crazy” and had mentioned that his wife was dead.

When Elizabethtown Borough Police arrived, they found Reynolds’ body inside a bathtub on the second floor, with blood smeared across the walls and multiple head-sized holes.

Mello was arrested at the scene and later confessed to the assault, admitting that he punched and kicked his wife repeatedly while she was on the ground.

Judge Condemns ‘Horror’ of the Crime

In delivering the mandatory life sentence, Judge Ashworth called the crime “horrific and inhumane”, saying no punishment could undo what had been done.

Although Mello’s attorney claimed he was remorseful, the defendant refused to speak when given the opportunity to address the court.

Along with the life sentence, Mello was ordered to pay $4,500 in restitution to Reynolds’ family.
