Pilsen Neighbors Remember “Pepe,” Innocent Bystander Killed In Weekend Shooting

CHICAGO — A man known to neighbors only as “Pepe” is being remembered as a beloved community fixture in Pilsen, after he was killed during a Labor Day weekend shooting that left seven people dead citywide.

Remembering A Familiar Face

Though little is known about Pepe’s full background — including his last name or whether he had a permanent home — residents say he left an unforgettable impression on the neighborhood.

“It broke my heart because he didn’t do nothing,” said neighbor Marlene Cabrera, who brought a candle to his memorial. “It was nothing like that”.

Another neighbor, Dan Buchanan, described Pepe as someone who was always joyful and easy to be around.

“He was very liked. Everyone even that night was just talking about how happy and giggly he was,” Buchanan said. “It’s heartbreaking, because yeah, he was one of the sweetest, like peaceful dudes ever. He didn’t bother anybody”.

Shooting Near Recording Studio

Police said Pepe was likely an innocent bystander caught in crossfire. The shooting happened near 17th Street and Wolcott Avenue, where two separate incidents unfolded within minutes.

Videos circulating on social media show multiple gunmen firing dozens of rounds and people scattering. Some neighbors said the violence appeared connected to an unlicensed event space or recording studio operating in the area.

Calls For Change

Neighbors are now sharing those videos with Ald. Byron Sigcho-Lopez’s (25th) office, urging city officials to shut down unlicensed venues and address rising gun violence in Pilsen.

Buchanan added that residents are raising money to ensure Pepe receives a proper funeral service should no family come forward.

“Just some kind of message to people that like, you know, it doesn’t matter who you are. He was a really good dude. He wasn’t involved in any of this… and this stuff has to stop,” Buchanan said.

Pepe’s death has left neighbors grieving and calling for safer streets. As the investigation continues, community members hope his memory sparks action against violence in Pilsen. For more updates on Chicago neighborhood safety and community stories, visit ChicagoMusicGuide.com.
