St. Charles Mother Charged With Murder After 16-Year-Old Son Found Dead in Family Home

ST. CHARLES, Missouri — Police have identified the 16-year-old boy killed over the weekend in a St. Charles home as Carter Bennett, and his mother is now charged with first-degree murder in connection with his death.
Teen Found Dead in Family Home
Officers were called to the 3200 block of Lightfoot Drive before 11 a.m. Monday, where they found Bennett dead inside the home. According to investigators, his mother, Krista Roy, 47, had earlier attempted to take her own life and was being treated at a hospital when detectives took her into custody.
Mother Confessed to Killing
Court documents state Roy admitted to killing her son. She told detectives she had taken her ex-husband’s Bersa .380 handgun on September 26 with the intent to kill her son and then herself. Authorities say Roy shot Bennett while he was sleeping. When she heard him cry out in pain, she allegedly retrieved a knife from the kitchen and stabbed him to “put him out of his pain”.
Roy is charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action. She remains in the St. Charles County Jail on a $1 million cash-only bond. At her arraignment Wednesday, Roy entered a not guilty plea and was denied a bond change. A bond hearing is scheduled for next Thursday.
Community in Shock
Neighbors have been leaving flowers and messages at a growing memorial outside the family’s home. The City of St. Charles School District confirmed Bennett was a former student who last attended St. Charles High School during the 2024–2025 school year.
In a statement to parents, the district said: “We are saddened to learn of the passing of a former student. Our hearts go out to the child’s family, friends and all who loved him. Our staff members are prepared to provide care and connect students with counseling support if needed.”
The case has left the St. Charles community shaken, as residents grapple with the devastating loss of a teenager whose life was cut short inside his own home. For more breaking updates on crime and justice across Missouri, follow ChicagoMusicGuide.com.
