WEST DES MOINES, Iowa – Authorities confirmed that a student at Valley High School was found with a handgun on campus Tuesday afternoon after school staff responded to a vaping-related report.

Handgun Discovered After Vaping Report

According to the West Des Moines Police Department, the school resource officer was alerted around 2:15 p.m. about suspected vaping in a restroom. When the officer and school administrators investigated, they discovered that one of the students involved was carrying a handgun.

Both students connected to the incident were removed from school grounds. Police said that one of the students was later taken to Juvenile Court on an unrelated matter.

No Threats or Injuries Reported

Authorities emphasized that while the presence of the firearm was alarming, there was no violence, threats, or injuries associated with the discovery. The handgun was seized by police, and the incident remains under investigation.
