Texas Man Accused of Killing 3 and Injuring 3 Others Before Crashing Minivan Into Buc-ee’s and Shooting Himself, Police Say

ENNIS, TEXAS — A horrific string of violence in Texas left three people dead and three others injured after a man allegedly went on a shooting spree before crashing into a Buc-ee’s convenience store and shooting himself, police said.
The suspect, identified as 29-year-old Christopher Reid Jr., is now hospitalized after attempting suicide following the deadly rampage that unfolded early Friday morning, according to the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office and WFAA.
Investigators say Reid shot five people — killing three — inside a home in Mabank shortly before 2:30 a.m. He then fled in a 2003 Dodge Caravan, driving nearly 40 miles to a Buc-ee’s in Ennis, where he crashed into the store around 5 a.m., striking a woman and pinning her against a sales display before turning the gun on himself.
“He Said His Brother Shot Him”: Neighbor Recalls Bloody Encounter
One surviving victim, identified as 24-year-old Colton Reid, reportedly fled the home after being shot and banged on a neighbor’s door for help.
“He came tapping on the door, real loud,” neighbor Cheryl Noble told WFAA. “He said, ‘Help me, I’ve been shot.’ He said his brother shot him.”
Authorities have not confirmed whether all the victims were related, but police identified the deceased as Kimberly Simpson, 51; Connie Patrick, 72; and Ronny Hammonds, 57. Hammonds reportedly suffered multiple stab wounds and blunt-force trauma in addition to gunshot injuries.
The two survivors—Colton Reid and 70-year-old Henry Hopgood—were taken to a hospital. Their current conditions have not been released.
Buc-ee’s Crash Leaves Another Victim Injured
After the shootings, Reid drove his minivan into the Buc-ee’s on Interstate 45, crashing through the storefront and pinning a female customer inside. She was rushed to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to recover.
Reid then reportedly shot himself in the head inside the store, but survived the self-inflicted wound. He remains in critical condition under police custody.
“This was an extremely violent and disturbing sequence of events,” the Henderson County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement, adding that no further suspects are being sought at this time.
Investigation Ongoing Into Motive and Timeline
Authorities from Henderson County, Ennis Police, and the Texas Rangers are now collaborating to determine what triggered the deadly spree.
While the motive remains unclear, officials said evidence suggests the shootings and subsequent crash were intentional acts of rage and despair. The victims were found both inside and outside the home on Taso Drive in Mabank’s Cedar Creek subdivision.
The community remains in shock as investigators process multiple crime scenes spread across two Texas counties.
