Texas Man Assaulted Ex-Girlfriend Twice in One Day — Fled When Deputies Arrived, Then Returned Hours Later to Attack Again, Police Say

EL PASO, Texas — A 32-year-old man is facing multiple felony charges after allegedly assaulting his ex-girlfriend twice in the same day, fleeing when deputies first arrived and then returning hours later to attack her again, according to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office.

Early Morning Assault and Escape

Authorities said John Anthony Etienne attacked his ex-girlfriend early Friday morning at a home in the 3700 block of Peak Place. Deputies responded to the scene around 4 a.m. after the woman called for help, claiming Etienne had assaulted her during a confrontation.

Before officers could arrive, Etienne allegedly fled the residence, leaving his victim with visible injuries. Deputies searched the area but were unable to locate him.

Suspect Returns Hours Later to Attack Again

Just a few hours later, the woman called 911 again — saying Etienne had come back to the house and attacked her for a second time after police left.

According to the sheriff’s office, the victim sustained multiple injuries during the second assault and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The nature of her injuries has not been detailed publicly, but authorities confirmed she survived the attack.

El Paso County officials said Etienne’s charges include unlawful restraint, assault of a family member impeding breath, continuous assault on a family member, and retaliation.

Repeat Offender with Violent History

Court records reviewed by investigators revealed that Etienne faced similar domestic assault charges in 2019, though that case was later dismissed.

He was arrested again on Saturday morning, one day after the double assault, and booked into the El Paso County Jail. His bond was set at $58,500, and he has since posted bail. His next court appearance has not yet been scheduled.

Sheriff Oscar Ugarte said the case underscores the department’s priority of protecting victims of domestic violence.

“The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office remains committed to protecting victims of family violence and ensuring offenders are held accountable,” Ugarte said in a statement.
