Woman Struck by Milwaukee Police Squad Car While Lying in Alley, Dies at Hospital
MILWAUKEE, Wis. — A Milwaukee police officer struck a woman with his squad car Tuesday morning while responding to a welfare check, and the woman later died at a hospital, according to officials.
The incident occurred around 11 a.m. near South 20th Street and West Lapham Street on the city’s south side. Police said they were responding to a call about a person walking in and out of traffic when the squad turned into an alley and hit the woman, who was lying near the entrance.
Circumstances of the Incident
Assistant Police Chief Nicole Waldner stated that the woman was lying down in the alley apron as the officer’s squad turned in. Several cars were parked on the street in front of the entrance, which may have limited visibility.
The woman, who has not yet been publicly identified, was conscious immediately after being struck. She was transported to a local hospital, where she was later pronounced dead by medical staff.
Witnesses told 12 News that the woman may have been suffering from a medical issue before police arrived, as she was seen lying motionless in the alley entrance prior to the collision.
Community Reaction
Local resident Edward Garrett, who lives nearby, expressed frustration and disbelief over the situation.
“This is not something that should be happening. This is ridiculous,” Garrett said. “The police should know what they’re doing. Not this.”
Garrett also questioned how the officer could have missed seeing the woman.
“Their job is to protect us, not hurt us, so this is very difficult and concerning as a community to see this happening,” he added.
Investigation and Officer Status
The Milwaukee County Medical Examiner’s Office said the cause of death is pending an autopsy, expected within the next two days.
Police confirmed that the officer involved is a 44-year-old man with 18 years of service. He has been placed on administrative duty, which is standard protocol while the case is investigated.
The Milwaukee Area Investigative Team (MAIT) is handling the case, with the Waukesha Police Department leading the investigation.
The incident has raised serious questions within the community about police practices and safety during welfare checks. Stay connected with ChicagoMusicGuide.com for updates as more information becomes available, including autopsy results and investigative findings.
