Woodford County Man Arrested After Juvenile Shot During Versailles Street Confrontation

VERSAILLES, KENTUCKY — A 25-year-old Woodford County man has been arrested after a juvenile was shot and injured during a confrontation in Versailles on Saturday evening, according to local police.

An arrest citation obtained by LEX 18 identifies the suspect as Jai Burgess, who now faces charges of first-degree assault and first-degree wanton endangerment.

Juvenile Shot in Leg, Hospitalized After Shooting

Police said the Versailles Police Department was called to Bluegrass Community Hospital around 6:45 p.m. Saturday after a report of a gunshot victim.

When officers arrived, they found a juvenile with a gunshot wound to the lower leg. The child was reportedly sitting in the front passenger seat of a vehicle at the time of the shooting.

Investigators later determined that the gunfire originated from an incident on Macey Avenue, where six shell casings were recovered.

Suspect Admitted to Firing at Vehicle

According to police, Burgess admitted during an interview that he fired multiple rounds at a passing vehicle, claiming the driver had “brandished a firearm and pointed it at him.”

However, the driver denied having a weapon, and a search of the vehicle by officers found no firearm inside.

Police concluded that Burgess’s actions placed multiple lives in danger, including the juvenile who was struck.

Charges and Custody Status

Burgess was booked into the Woodford County Detention Center, where he remains held pending further court proceedings.

The injured juvenile is expected to recover from their injuries, according to investigators.

Authorities have not released additional details about what led to the confrontation or whether more arrests could follow.
