Wisconsin Man Dead, Another in Custody After Shooting on Hunting Property in Shawano County
SHAWANO COUNTY, WISCONSIN — A homicide investigation is underway in Shawano County after a 67-year-old man was found dead on rural hunting property west of Tigerton, authorities confirmed.
Deputies with the Shawano County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call around 9:15 p.m. Wednesday on County Road M in the Town of Germania, after a man reported that his friend had been shot.
Caller Reported Shooting and Took Cover
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the 911 caller told dispatchers that a man on the property had shot his friend. Fearing for his safety, the caller locked himself inside a building and told dispatchers he would defend himself if necessary.
While still on the phone, the suspect allegedly attempted to break into the building, prompting the caller to fire a gun toward the suspect.
When deputies arrived, they found the suspect outside the home. He initially refused to comply with officers’ commands but was taken into custody without further incident a short time later.
Victim Found Dead in Garage
Deputies conducted a search of the property and found a deceased man inside a garage. The victim has been identified as a 67-year-old man from Greenleaf, Wisconsin.
The suspect, identified as a 74-year-old man from Clintonville, was taken to a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries before being booked into the Shawano County Jail on homicide-related charges.
Investigators said all three individuals — the victim, suspect, and caller — were acquainted through shared ownership of hunting land in the area.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities have not yet released the motive behind the shooting, but they confirmed that the 911 caller cooperated fully and provided a detailed account of what occurred before and after the gunfire.
The Wisconsin Department of Criminal Investigation, Stockbridge-Munsee Police Department, Tigerton Ambulance, and the Shawano County Coroner’s Office assisted at the scene.
Officials emphasized that there is no ongoing threat to the public.
