Louisville Man Arrested Months After Fatal Apartment Shooting That Killed Mitchale Groves

LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY — Police have arrested a man in connection with a September shooting that left one person dead inside a Louisville apartment, bringing an end to a two-month investigation.

According to the Louisville Metro Police Department, James Belle has been charged with reckless homicide in the death of Mitchale Groves. The case, handled by the department’s Homicide Unit, was reopened this week after new developments led to Belle’s arrest.

Details of the September Shooting

Officers were called around 4 a.m. on September 6 to the 5500 block of Lodema Way, located in the Newburg neighborhood, for reports of gunfire inside an apartment.

When police arrived, they found Groves suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to investigators.

At the time, police said everyone involved in the incident had been accounted for, but no arrests were immediately made. Detectives continued to gather evidence and witness statements before filing the homicide charge this week.

Suspect Charged with Reckless Homicide

Court documents show that Belle, who was taken into custody in early November, faces one count of reckless homicide. Authorities have not released additional details about what led to the shooting or what connection, if any, existed between Belle and Groves.

The Jefferson County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office is expected to review the case as investigators continue to process forensic evidence and interview witnesses.

Community and Police Response

Residents in the Newburg area have expressed relief following the arrest, hoping it brings closure to Groves’ family and neighbors shaken by the incident. Police said the arrest reflects ongoing efforts to reduce gun violence and improve neighborhood safety across Louisville.
