Montana Weather Alert: Strong Winds Create Hazardous Conditions on Fort Peck Lake

GLASGOW, Mont. — The National Weather Service in Glasgow has issued a Lake Wind Advisory for Fort Peck Lake through 6 p.m. Friday, warning boaters of dangerous conditions as winds and waves intensify across the region.
Gusts up to 35 mph
Forecasters said northwest winds of 15 to 25 mph, with gusts as high as 35 mph, will persist through Friday afternoon.
These winds are expected to generate wave heights of up to 3 feet on Fort Peck Lake, raising the risk of capsizing for smaller craft. Officials cautioned that conditions could become especially dangerous for recreational boaters.
Impact on Surrounding Communities
Communities including Glasgow, Circle, Malta, Jordan, and Hinsdale may also experience breezy conditions throughout the day.
In addition to rough waters, roads near Fort Peck Dam could see blowing dust and reduced visibility, and high-profile vehicles may struggle with crosswinds on exposed stretches.
Weekend Forecast Brings Relief
Emergency managers are urging residents to avoid unnecessary boating trips until conditions improve. Boaters are advised to secure small craft along the shoreline to prevent damage.
Clear skies and calmer conditions are expected to return Saturday, with highs near 81 degrees.
