New York Man in Critical Condition After Jumping in Front of Q Train on Upper East Side, Police Say

MANHATTAN, NEW YORK — A Halloween tragedy unfolded on the Upper East Side when a man was struck by a northbound Q train in an apparent suicide attempt, leaving him in critical condition, according to New York police.

Authorities said the incident occurred just after 5:30 p.m. as the train was pulling into the station. Witnesses reported chaos as commuters screamed and power was cut to the northbound line while first responders rushed to rescue the victim trapped beneath the train.

Police: Victim Jumped in Front of Train

A police spokesperson confirmed the conductor saw the man jump onto the tracks moments before the train arrived. Emergency crews managed to pull him from beneath the train and transport him to NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center in critical condition.

“The train conductor observed an individual jump in front of the train as it was pulling into the station,” police said in an official statement.

Fire officials with the FDNY said there was “no update” on the man’s condition as of Nov. 2, and police have not released his identity or age.

Rush Hour Chaos and Service Disruptions

Service on the northbound and Queens-bound Q line was temporarily suspended during the rescue operation, causing heavy delays during evening rush hour. Power was restored shortly before 6:30 p.m., and normal train operations resumed thereafter.

Police said no criminality was involved, confirming the case is being treated as an attempted suicide.
