Rib Mountain Police Hunt Bicyclist Suspect Who Stole $9K Diamond Ring in Overnight Vehicle Break-Ins

RIB MOUNTAIN, WISCONSIN — Authorities are asking for the public’s help in identifying a suspect involved in a string of overnight vehicle break-ins earlier this month in the Rib Mountain area, where cash and valuable jewelry were stolen from unlocked cars.

The Marathon County Sheriff’s Office and Crime Stoppers said the incidents occurred between October 15 and 16 in the neighborhood west of the Wisconsin River near Marigold Road and County Road KK.

Suspect Broke Into Unlocked Cars

Investigators said the thief targeted unlocked vehicles during the overnight hours, stealing $22 in cash and a wedding and engagement ring set valued at $9,128.95 in one case.

“People want to feel safe in their home, they want to feel safe on their property,” said Detective Brad Tatro of the Marathon County Sheriff’s Office.

The stolen engagement ring is described as a 14k white gold diamond ring with an 0.80-carat round center stone (color H, clarity I1), surrounded by 12 smaller diamonds totaling 0.72 carats. The matching wedding band is a gold prong-set diamond ring, size 4.5, with 13 round G-H color SI1 stones.

Suspect Description and Possible Locations

The suspect is described as a white male wearing a hooded sweatshirt, carrying a flashlight, and riding a bicycle. He was reportedly seen near County Road KK, Foxglove Road, and Wintergreen Road, as well as other nearby streets.

“If you have a Ring doorbell or Arlo camera, check footage from October 15 into the 16th,” said Detective Tatro. “If you have any video of a suspect on a bicycle, we’re very interested in that.”

Safety Advice for Residents

Authorities are reminding residents to lock their vehicles and remove visible valuables to avoid being targeted.

“Thieves look for something quick and easy,” Tatro said. “If they have to work hard for it, they’ll move on to the next target.”
